This documentation describes how to use BigBlueButton (BBB) within your Moodle learning management system to host webinars and online meetings.
1. System Overview & Purpose
BigBlueButton is seamlessly integrated as an activity within Moodle. It allows you to launch virtual classrooms directly from your Moodle courses. Participants can join the online session without installing any additional software. Once the webinar is finished, automated recordings will automatically appear within the same Moodle activity.
2. System Requirements
BigBlueButton runs entirely inside your web browser. No app installation is required.
Supported Browsers: The latest stable versions of Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, or Apple Safari.
Hardware (Desktop/Laptop): At least 4 GB of RAM (8 GB or more is highly recommended for smooth screen sharing and webcam usage).
Internet Connection: A minimum of 1 Mbps upload and 2 Mbps download bandwidth. For presenters sharing their screen, at least 2 Mbps upload is recommended.
Audio: A headset or headphones are strongly recommended to prevent echoes and background noise.
3. Setup & Configuration
Setting up a webinar session takes place directly inside your Moodle course:
Configuration: Pre-configure and link Moodle to the BBB server. This is done once by the administrator.
Add Activity: Turn editing on in your Moodle course and add the BigBlueButton activity module.
Room Settings: Name your webinar room and save the changes. The room is now ready for you and your students. This is also the location where future recordings will be listed.
4. Hosting a Webinar
Follow these steps to run your online session successfully:
Join Room: Click on the BBB activity inside your Moodle course and select "Join session".
Audio & Video Check: Choose "Microphone" when prompted and grant your browser permission to access it. Test your webcam if needed.
Upload Presentation: Click the actions icon in the bottom-right corner of the BBB interface to upload your slides (PDF format is recommended).
Interactive Features: During the session, you can engage your audience using the built-in tools:
Presentation controls and digital whiteboard
Public and private chat channels
Breakout rooms for group activities
Live polls and quizzes for instant feedback
External video playback and much more
5. Troubleshooting
If you encounter any technical issues, these quick steps usually resolve them:
Connection Lost / Slow Loading: Wait a brief moment. BBB will automatically try to reconnect up to 20 times. If it does not recover, simply rejoin the session from Moodle.
Audio/Microphone Issues: Ensure that your browser has permission to access your microphone (check the padlock icon in your browser's address bar). Try unplugging and replugging your headset.
Lag or Performance Drops: Close unnecessary browser tabs and applications on your computer to free up memory (RAM) if the system responds slowly.
